Travel Insurance – Is checking in baggage a thing of the past?
This is great for those short trips away, maybe for a single night or two! But can you really travel with just hand luggage for any longer?
To travel with just hand luggage you need to be aware of the size of bag you can take onboard. The size each carrier allows varies, however 55x40x20cm seems a safe bet (remember to check before you travel!). This is fine for a few days but a week could be a struggle. A beech holiday may be possible if you intend to wash your clothes whilst you are there and buy other essentials on arrival, but travel trips to colder climates seems pretty impossible!
Weight of the bag can now also be a factor so you should check this out with your carrier too. It is reported some don’t care as long as it fits in the overhead locker and you are able to lift it unassisted, while others such as Ryanair, currently have a maximum limit of 10kg. This can obviously limit what you can squeeze in and 10kg is only realistically acceptable for short travel breaks.
Also, remember if you are travelling no frills then it is one bag and one bag only. If any Women out there are thinking you can put all your make-up in your hand-bag think again! If you need an extra bag like a handbag or laptop, you are going to need to travel with a more established airline, such as BA or Virgin – but will the extra cost outweigh checking bags in with a budget liner?
So, is it cheaper to check baggage in with a budget airline then get auto inclusion with other airlines?
Obviously this depends oh the price of your budget flight. If it’s a penny then it probably will be cheaper, but if you are travelling last minute it is worth checking out medium to prime the cost could be comparable and you will probably fly to a central airport where it will not cost so much for transport when you land.
Let’s look at the prices. Check a bag in with Ryanair and they will currently charge you £20 for a return flight with a slimline 15kg limit. Do it last minute and that doubles to £40. Compare that to Virgin and BA and you have a more generous 23kg limit and pay nothing for the privilege!
Basically, if you are going for a week away and you really can carry just one small bag then do it, however for the extra hassle and cost, the convenience of having what you want on holiday and not having to waste time washing (and ironing) probably justifies the cost!
What else do you need to take on holiday? Travel insurance is one, it is a must! This year, single trip travel insurance is going to be a more common purchase than annual multi trip travel insurance. Because of the credit crunch people are less likely to take multiple trips away so single trip insurance is the purchase you should be looking to make!

Travel Insurance equality push may increase premiums.
In an article written by the Daily Mail on the 3rd March, Paul Cann of Help the Aged said “Age alone should not be the basis of an insurance premium or quote. Insurers are entitled to make commercial decisions, but these should be based on evidence of risk and not the date of birth on a birth certificate”.
There are Government plans to bar age discrimination, which although pleasing for the older age group, could result in insurance price rises for millions. If firms are no longer able to take customers’ ages in to consideration when assessing risk, other forms of insurance may be hit by the unintended consequences of the Governments legislation, the Association of British Insurers said. The effect of a proposed Equality Bill banning age discrimination in the provision of goods and services would mean drivers considered a lower risk, subsidising higher risk drivers, resulting in many more of us paying increased car insurance premiums.
The ABI said that the average travel insurance claim for someone over 65 was nearly three and halftimes higher than for those under 50.
Therefore there is no doubt that age is a factor when assessing risk, and increased claims are more common in the higher age bracket, so do you think others should have to subsidise those considered a higher risk? Do you think experienced drivers would be happy to subsidise younger drivers for their car insurance?
Please let us know your thoughts on this; do you think premiums should be equal for all?

Travel Insurance options for single and annual multi trip – save money!
With Click4Quote travel insurance there are options for the destinations you intend to travel to, for example you have the option for worldwide travel cover excluding the USA & Canada, which means you pay a lower price as you are not travelling to these countries which have associated higher cost of claims.
We also offer more specific cover sections such as ski insurance, golf travel and business travel cover which is available on the multi trip travel insurance and our Single Trip Insurance policies if required. The options are not included as standard and can be purchased as add-ons to the travel policy which means you do not pay more than you need to for the cover you require.
With annual multi trip travel insurance and our Single Trip Travel Insurance we also have special family and couple rates which are cheaper to purchase than travelling as individuals. We also have a special single parent family rate and offer a discount to over 10 individuals travelling together on a single policy.
We also offer more specific cover sections such as ski insurance, golf travel and business travel cover which is available on the multi trip travel insurance and our Single Trip Travel Insurance policies if required. The options are not included as standard and can be purchased as add-ons to the travel policy which means you do not pay more than you need to for the cover you require.
A good option to choose is the excess waiver which is available on both the annual multi trip travel insurance and single trip travel insurance. Excesses are applied per person, per incident, per section which, if you have a family policy may mean a large excess payable since the excess is payable per person insured and not on a group basis. By including the excess waiver for a small additional payment you would pay no excess whatsoever which would reduce financial stress. Excess waivers would not apply to any special excess that have been applied such as those for pre-existing medical conditions or for specialist sports activities.
To take advantage of any of the above travel insurance cover visit Click4Quote.com where you can quote and buy travel insurance online with instant documentation. We are not however a pire internet company so if you would discuss in more detail any of the options above with an advisor call us Monday to Friday 9am to 5:30pm.
